Gemstone spotlight: Apatite – bright, fresh and a bit tropical
Each month I highlight a gemstone. This time: apatite. A gemstone with beautiful color, bright energy and a name you secretly keep mispronouncing. In this blog I briefly share what apatite stands for as well as show you how I incorporated this beautiful gemstone into my jewelry.
What is the Apatite Gemstone?
Apatite is a mineral that is usually blue or blue-green – a bit of a tropical and summer feel gives this beautiful gemstone. Known for its fresh energy, the apatite gemstone is often referred to as a “stone of inspiration and focus. Whether you have a thing for it or not: the color alone is reason enough to be inspired by it.
Little Apatite gemstone facts (if you like trivia)
- Hardness: 5
Apatite is somewhat softer than most gemstones. No disaster, as long as you treat your jewelry with care. - Growth system: hexagonal
In other words, the crystal grows in hexagons. You can’t see this on the outside of the gemstone, but still nice to know. - Transparency: transparent
Apatite is derived from the Greek word Apate, which means deception/delusion. The Gemstone gets its name because of its interchangeability with other gemstones such as beryl, andalusite and topaz.
The deposits of the apatite gemstone include: Brazil, Burma, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mexico, Norway, Sri Lanka, USA and South Africa.
Why I like to use Apatite in my jewelry
Personally, I love the color of the apatite so much! With this gemstone, I really get a summer feeling because of its beautiful teal color. Because of its beautiful and striking color, I personally find the apatite very nice to combine with silver. But in the wide flower ring I made in it, the blue-green apatite is set in a 14-karat yellow gold setting. And that too gives a very nice effect.
